Denmark: Europe in flames – Fair Transport or free competition?

On 16 June, during the Danish Festival for Lobbyist in Bornholm, politicians and people, 3F Transport Union facilitated a debate about Fair Transport in a borderless Europe.  Member of the European Parliament Jens Rohde (ALDE), Former Danish Transport Minister Pia Olsen Dyhr (GREENS), Jan Villadsen, (President of 3F Transport and member of the ETF Management Committee), Michael Svane, ( Danish industry – Transport section and chairman of the transport committee of Business Europe) were present at the event.

Far too many European lorry drivers are suffering from shocking working conditions. Wage dumping, long periods abroad and being forced to sleep in the lorry for 7 weeks in a row is their everyday and a sad “new normal” in the sector. That prooves that there is a huge difference between “fair” and “free” movement, and that an integrated Europe needs stricter rules and better control. Not least via the called ”Mobility Package” from the European Commission, The European Parliament and the Council of European Member states.

What can be the best possible way forward? How can all countries and all politicians get onboard the fair demands from the transport workers? Can the proposal, “Fair Mobility” from 3F Transport and European Transport Workers Federation solve the problems and make the transport sector fair? These were the main topics discussed during the debate.
