Italy: Naples dock strike unleashes European wave of solidarity

On 13 March, the local branches of Italian unions FILT-CGIL, FIT-CISL and UILTRASPORTI took strike action in the port of Naples. Grandi Navi Veloci (a company owned by MSC) recently submitted a request to the Naples port authority to carry out self-handling on its ferries operating between Palermo and Naples. Along with requesting self-handling, GNV also demands lowering the rates paid for the dockers hired through the labour pools. Similar requests would have been submitted to other Italian port authorities. All these request should be denied. Delegations of port workers from several Italian ports joined the picket lines in Naples and dockers’ unions across Europe showed their solidarity.

Claiming lashing back is the priority for the Fair Transport Europe campaign. The strike in Naples will take place just one week ahead of our Fair Transport action week, which will be joined by many dockers and seafarers unions from all around Europe.
